Waitomo and Te Akau

2 days off so down via the Hamilton gardens to Waitomo

The surreal Garden was!

At Waitomo we went into the Rua Kuri cave

Glow worms fishing for dinner

Then back home via Te Akau, to show from whence I have come

Looking across to the MacDougall place, which I guess is Derek Bregmans still

I have trouble looking out this way and reconciling it with my memory

But this one, the Bluff I remember well

Looking towards the Philburn House, that’s who my father worked for

Looking the other way, we lived there, it has changed a lot, not for the better

And the local primary school, there were just above a hundred pupils when I left there

Updates

How it was in my childhood

  1. I can feel the cold of the winter of 1980 (when I first ran into you) in those photos of the rural houses and landscape. I see that all the macrocarpa’s are gone from your old family weatherboard. That would have amplified both the views and the cold. ‘Nelson’s Choice’ on most hillsides in rural NZ eh?
